Year 13: Weekly New/Digital Media homework Netflix raises prices for first time in two years BBC - 05/10/17 This article notes about the increased Netflix subscription prices and the reasoning behind this. Rising competitors such as Amazon, Hulu and etc have contributed to Netflix increasing their subscriptions and focusing on Netflix original programmes.   A standard UK plan will rise 50p to £7.99 a month. Premium subscription for four simultaneous users rises £1 to £9.99 a month. The standard US plan increases by $1 to $10.99 a month, with a $2 rise to $13.99 for the premium option. A basic subscription in the UK, which does not offer high definition viewing, remains at £5.99 a month. LR Feedback The development of new/digital media means the audience is more powerful in terms of consumption and production. Discuss the arguments for and against this view. Power in itself has been a direct result of  new/digital media as the significant technological development of this has meant that audiences have more options in how they consume and produce media, such as the news.  New/digital media has allowed there to be an advance throughout eras as content, focusing on the news, had to historically be accessed on multiple different platforms, such as print and broadcast, but has now converged and is available on one device - smartphones.  This predominance of this global digital age is evident as the history of the internet started from December 1995 where 0.4% of the world population used the internet to, up to date, June 2017 where 51% use the internet.  This has led to globalisation and includes advantages in the news such as variety and prosume...

Identities and the Media: Post-colonialism & Orientalism 1) Watch the opening of Yasmin (2004) again. Does it offer a positive or negative view of British Muslims? To what extent does it reinforce or challenge Edward Said's theory of Orientalism - that the west is superior to the exotic or uncivilised east? 2) Summarise the three theorists we have looked at this week: Alvarado, Fanon and Said. 3) Finally, choose  ONE  clip for  EACH  of the theorists and explain how you could apply that theory to the clip.
